  College Street of Kolkata is famous for big and small book stores selling new as well as old second hand books. The locality has a nick name, ‘Boi Para’ (colony of books). People from all over the state of west Bengal come to buy new and used books, and always get them at a very fair price. Many large publishing houses like: Ananda Publishers, Abhijan Publishers, Dey's Publishing, Rupa & Co. etc.) are situated here. It is the largest second-hand book market in the world and largest book market in India and collectively boasts of a collection of almost any title ever sold at Kolkata. One can buy rare books at throw-away prices and extensive bargaining take place.
In the year 2007, College Street was highlighted among the most renowned landmarks of India which got the chance to be featured in Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia” list.
In its place, the country's first ever book mall will come up that will boast of a floor space of 7, 80,000 square feet. The Bengal Shelter Housing Development Ltd, a 50:50 joint project of the Government of West Bengal and Shelter Housing Limited will be the promoter of the new project.
The presence of various educational institution, like The Hindu School (1817),Hare School (1818),Presidency University(1817), Sanskrit College (1824)Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (1857), and the Calcutta University (1857) on this street helped to name it the ‘College Street’.
